The Gemini AO laser as seen from Cerro Tololo

 

The Gemini telescope uses a powerful laser as part of its adaptive optics system.  This 253s image was taken from Cerro Tololo and clearly shows the laser pointing straight up against a background of stars rotating overhead. (Click for larger)

    Cool picture. I am guessing you can not see the laser with normal eyesight and that you only see it with pictures like this?

    I love the stars, looks like they are falling, or we are flying.

    Hi Liz,

    Yes, it is not visible to the naked eye, although while I was looking for it on the dark night my mind projected all sorts of lines on the sky to fool me.

    As for falling or flying, it all depends on your point of view ;-)
